How to maintain your roof

Replacing a roof can be expensive and time consuming – you will have to contact roofing contractors to get quotes, hire a reputable roofing company and most likely spend thousands of dollars on roofing materials and labor. Maintaining your roof  can go a long way in terms of saving you time and money. Here are some tips on how to maintain your roof:

  • Check your ceiling for any brown patches. These patches indicate water  damage. Remember that finding the damage isn’t always easy because the water will build up at the lowest point of the ceiling – get a roofing contractor to locate the source of your leak.
  • If your neighbors have experienced storm, rain or wind damage but you have not yet detected any leaks you may still consider getting an inspection to ensure that damage hasn't occurred.
  • If you can visually see damage from the outside, but cannot yet detect any damage inside you should definitely call a roofing expert to assess the damage that is visible.  This may save you hundreds or thousands of dollars in the future, if you let it go.
  • If there are trees near your house, trim the braches so that they do not touch the roof (if there are strong winds, these branches can damage your roof tiles or shingles).
  • Clean your roof with a pressure washer or the hose you use for garden work every few months to remove leaves, debris and dirt.
  • After a storm, check for broken tiles or torn or damaged shingles.
  • Check the flashings around vents and chimneys.
  • Make sure that leaves haven’t built up in your gutter system.
  • If your roofing systems has different types of metal tiles, these metals shouldn’t touch (if they are exposed to excessive heat, corrosion can occur)
  • If you are not able to get onto your roof, call a roofing expert to give your roof an inspection.
